Cakes & Confections
I've studied the art of French pastry and have a BA in Culinary Arts from Le Cordon Bleu Culinary Institute. Like you, I care about how the goods I buy were made and about who made them. By choosing a local business that heeds transparency in all ingredients, you can make a difference, know that your goods were made ethically, and that your purchase supports a greater cause. To me, that means using real butter, never margarine. Real cream, never fake substitutes. Real products made by us by hand, never bought in to display as our own.
Because I use from-scratch ingredients and hand make every item, no two pieces are exactly alike. Each piece is unique, just like your event. Your gifts, your personality, your style are all reflective of what your desserts should be. We have a certain style and aesthetic that is original to us, and recognizable in the piping and decorating techniques we use.
Since starting in 2015, Hopscotch began selling custom cakes to friends and family and branched out to a commercial kitchen facility, Urbana’s Market at the Square, the Hob Nob market, Middle Market, Holiday Market, Champaign’s Tuesday Market, as well as our very own Holiday Pop-Up with other local designers. We’ve done collaborative work with Pear Tree Estate, iHotel, and the Champaign Country Club, just to name a few. We buy our cream from Kilgus farms, and as much of our produce as possible from other farmer vendors at the market.
While Illinois isn’t my home state, being here feels like home to me. After a long first year while exploring the area, I have come to love it here! Chambana is such a beautiful place, where heritage meets creativity and people come together to inspire and serve one another.
On my days off you can find me with my husband Travis and dogs Stranger and Gus at our home in our old house in historic Urbana. I love to meet the people who grew my food and then using the local, seasonal ingredients to cook at home. I'm a big fan of TV-Dramas and can often be found catching up on episodes of Game of Thrones or Downton Abbey ( or of course House of Cards, because it’s the best show on tv).
I'm Kaya Tate, pastry chef, social entrepreneur, and West Coast native. I design bespoke pastry goods from quality ingredients for adventurous, fun-loving individuals who want to create a healthy, sustainable lifestyle of a community of local artisans honing their craft.
Find us at our home base inside of the brand new Art Mart location in Champaign! Here you will find our full case of refrigerated cakes, tarts, petit fours, eclairs and mousses. As well as packaged items such as shortbread, marshmallows, brownies, and our signature salted caramels & sauce. We'll be there baking and stocking if you have any questions about a custom order, wedding information, or just to stop by and meet us!
"My first time trying her cupcakes was today at the Tuesday evening Champaign farmers market. Omg, they are delicious. We tried the nutella/chocolate and almond/orange cupcakes. The cake itself is so flavorful, moist and fresh tasting. The texture was great as well, not dry or crumbly. I can tell she puts a lot of time and quality ingredients into the cake. The icing also had tons of flavor, it didn't taste like just sugar, I could taste the individual ingredients. Very delicious! All of her creations were designed to be very visually pleasing, again, I can tell she really loves her craft and takes time to make sure each cake looks amazing. I might have to say the best cupcakes I've tried in town!" - April Porter
"I wanted a simple, yet classic, carrot cake for my husband's birthday and Kaya's cake was absolutely fantastic. From response time to ordering to a last-minute add-on, the entire ordering process was intuitive and efficient. But the cake...the cake! This cake was really the best I have ever had. Four adults and one picky toddler devoured their slices. My mom (who never wants leftovers of anything) insisted on a slice to take home. And the cake that remained was just as delicious the next day. I highly recommend Hopscotch for your next celebration that calls for a special cake. I would even suggest ordering a cake and making *that* the celebration. (It truly is that fantastic.)" - Rachael Dietkus Miller
"I'm so glad I found Hopscotch Cakes. I ordered a cake and cupcakes for my daughters birthday party—they were beautiful AND delicious. Kaya is so easy to work with, is super quick to respond, and totally went above and beyond. I already put in orders for my other daughter's bday party (and my own, don't judge) because I honestly just want more reasons to justify her beautiful confections. Sigh, they are soooo pretty, and soo sooooo good." - Haley Ahlers
"Always amazing! Our wedding cake was what dreams are made of!" - Marci Kyung
